Hand-Made

This project explored the idea of sculpting objects with film. Each frame of the ‘moving image’ is separated by space instead of time, resulting in three-dimensional form. These vessels are computationally traced and cut, the form generated in video by changing the profile of my hands. Software was written to convert the bitmap frames into vectors for laser cutting.

bowl all

The bowl in front uses the hand video as positive space. The bowl in the back uses the hands as negative space.

bowl new

By sweeping a cupped hand, I was able to create a volume to hold small items.

bowl stuff

The features of the hand create unique compartments to store objects.

bowl top

From the top view, you can see the hands changed from a closed fist to spread open.

older

This was an earlier iteration of the project. The transparency of the laser cut acrylic allows you to see back through previous frames.

The original videos of my hand moving.

process

The process of converting bitmap video frames to vector outlines is detailed at left. A similar process would be used for generating touchable images for the Camera for the Blind.
